Frome

Until the Industrial Revolution, Frome was one of the largest towns in Somerset and was larger than Bath until 1650. The Sunday Times in its report listed Frome as the South West's best on the UK's Best Places to Live. Born in Frome, John Webb Singer established his art metal work foundry in 1851.

In May 2016, Frome installed the community fridge in the country. Replacing the Frome Victoria Hospital in Park Road which had been in use since 1901, the hospital was opened in 2008. Following a consultation with people in the spring of 2008 which received over 3,000 responses, a Vision for Frome 2008-2028 has been developed.

The annual Frome Festival in July is the high-point, which has included more than 160 events held at venues in and around the town in recent years. Within the information point for Discover Frome, there is an arts centre, The Black Swan.

In Cork Street, the Westway, Frome's only cinema, in March 2016 closed and in February 2017 re-opened, after undergoing refurbishment that was extensive and changing hands. To combat loneliness in the town, Compassionate Frome was established by a local GP in 2013.

Either for collection or by delivery (central Frome), Frome has its online market, the FH launched in November 2018, where sustainable supplies from farmers and producers can be sourced. One of 67 constituencies, by the Reform Act 1832, Frome was given the right to elect its member of Parliament.

The evidence of Saxon occupation of Frome is a church built in 685 by St. Aldhelm. One of the Roman coins' hoards that was largest-ever in Britain, the Frome Hoard was found by a metal detectorist in April 2010. In September, the Frome & District Agricultural Society holds an Agricultural & Cheese Show.
